Delivery-Health Driver Found to Be Member of Theft Ring; Total Damages Exceed 5 Million Yen

How the Arrest Came About

On February 15, 2022, Kanagawa Prefectural Police arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of theft for repeatedly stealing from customers' homes while working as a transport driver for a delivery-health (deri-heru) business in Yokohama.

The man stole cash, credit cards, and valuables when he entered customers' apartment buildings to pick them up. The number of confirmed incidents alone exceeds 30, and total damages are believed to top 5 million yen.

Connection to a Theft Group

The investigation revealed that the man was a member of a separately operating three-person theft group. There is suspicion that the delivery-health driving job was deliberately chosen as a means of "scouting and gathering inside information." The group is said to have shared information such as customers' addresses and living situations and to have repeatedly committed crimes in an organized manner.

Security Challenges for the Industry

The case highlighted the lax hiring screening at delivery-health businesses and the structural risk posed by transport drivers having access to customer information. Industry insiders point out that "background checks on drivers and the strict management of customers' personal information are urgent priorities."
