Wednesday, 8:40 p.m., outside a FamilyMart
Most of my nights in Kabukicho start in a hotel room with the TV on, waiting for a knock. This one started on a sidewalk in Shinjuku 5-chome with a can of coffee, watching office workers cut toward Shinjuku-sanchome Station.
The shop was Night Venus (ナイトヴィーナス), a Kabukicho deriheru that says it opened in 2002 and is in its 24th year. It runs from noon to 6:00 a.m. every day, with phone reception from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. The listing claims about 80 women aged 18 to 25. The Q&A says the shop hires about 12% of applicants, and a banner a few inches away says 15%. Either way, the pitch is "picky." It also promises "clear pricing, no bait-and-switch and no fake attendance," which is a line every shop uses. Night Venus at least backs it with a price table that matches across four portals.
What brought me out was a banner on the shop's news feed: "The meet-up course is finally here."
How the meet-up course works
The machiawase (meet-up) course is spelled out on the shop's feed:
- When you call or book online, say "machiawase course de."
- Ten minutes before the booked time, pick a hotel from the shop's list and phone the hotel yourself to confirm a room is free. If you don't pick one, the shop suggests one to fit your budget.
- Meet her in front of FamilyMart Shinjuku 5-chome (新宿区新宿5-18-14). It's two minutes from Shinjuku-sanchome Station exit E1, or five from Higashi-Shinjuku exit A1. By taxi, the shop says to ask for "Nissin honsha-mae."
- Your time starts at hotel check-in. The walk from the store to the hotel isn't counted.
Not every woman does it. Look for "待ち合わせコース 〇" under the manager's comment on each profile.
The price is the best part. There's no surcharge, and as a launch campaign the shop waives the ¥1,000 Kabukicho-hotel transport fee and the ¥1,000 online nomination fee. Sixty minutes that normally total ¥21,000 come to ¥19,000. The fine print: women with a special rate cost extra, a repeat request still adds ¥2,000, and it can't be combined with other discounts.
The hotel list
The shop names ten Kabukicho 2-chome love hotels in two tiers. These are the rates it quotes:
| Tier | Hotel | Quoted rate |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Hotel Bless Shinjuku | from ¥2,500 (2 h) |
| Budget | Hotel 8 | from ¥2,990 (2 h) |
| Budget | Hotel XO Shinjuku | from ¥3,500 (2 h) |
| Budget | Hotel Yurakuzen | from ¥3,500 (2 h) |
| Budget | Hotel W-Aramis | from ¥3,900 (2 h) |
| Higher | Hotel Sense Tokyo | from ¥4,200 (2 h) |
| Higher | Hotel Grand Chariot | from ¥5,000 (3 h) |
| Higher | Hotel Abyss | from ¥5,500 (3 h) |
| Higher | Hotel Perrier | from ¥5,900 (2 h) |
| Higher | Hotel Balian Resort Shinjuku | from ¥7,800 (3 h) |
So the true budget for a 60-minute meet-up night is ¥19,000 for the course plus roughly ¥2,500 to ¥4,000 for the room. Budget around ¥23,000 all-in.
The walk, and what it changes
She showed up on time, waved like we'd met before, and we walked north toward Kabukicho together. That walk is the real product. It's under ten minutes of normal conversation (where I'm from, what she'd eaten, which hotel had the better bathtubs), and by the time the key card clicked, the awkward first minute that every hotel-delivery visit has was already over.
I'll skip the room itself. The play menu is the standard deriheru set, and the paid options are posted openly, from ¥1,000 extras up to ¥10,000 for video recording. Sixty minutes from check-in was enough because the small talk had happened on the sidewalk.
My total: ¥19,000 to the shop, ¥3,500 to the hotel.
How the meet-up course compares with the other deals
The rack rate is 60 min ¥19,000, 75 min ¥24,000, 90 min ¥28,000, 120 min ¥37,000, 150 min ¥46,000 and 180 min ¥55,000. Photo nomination is ¥1,000, a repeat request ¥2,000, and transport runs from ¥1,000 (a hotel in Shinjuku ward) to ¥4,000 (the outer wards and Musashino, Mitaka, Chofu and Komae). Extensions are ¥7,000 and up per 15 minutes. The four October discounts, none of which stack:
- Kabukicho discount: 60 minutes for ¥19,000 with nomination and transport included, for Kabukicho and Okubo hotels. In October, post a review on the spot and you get another ¥1,000 off plus 10 minutes, so 70 minutes for ¥18,000. That's the cheapest per-minute deal on the board if you already have a room.
- Sokuhime (available-now) discount: for women shown as "standing by." The headline is 60 minutes for ¥18,000 plus transport and 90 minutes for ¥26,000 with transport free, which is ¥4,000 under the regular ¥30,000. But the same coupon card also says "90 minutes and up." Ask before you count on the 60-minute price.
- Review discount: book online through Cityheaven, get 10 extra minutes and ¥2,000 back. You get 70 minutes on a ¥17,000 course fee, with nomination and transport added.
- Night Day (the 7th and 10th): ¥5,000 off any course plus a ¥5,000 voucher for the next month. It's only for same-day phone bookings after 11:00 a.m. to a Kabukicho hotel. The next one is November 7.
The meet-up course doesn't beat the Kabukicho discount on price. It ties at ¥19,000. What it buys you is the walk, a hotel picked for you, and play time that starts at the door instead of at the knock.
One cost to note: if you pay by card online, the shop adds 15% to the total.
The English listing that doesn't charge extra
Night Venus is on Japan Play Spot, an English-language portal. Unusually, its English menu matches the Japanese one yen for yen: 60 minutes ¥19,000, 90 minutes ¥28,000, and so on, with nomination at ¥1,000. Several shops I've covered recently charge English bookers 1.5 to 2.7 times the Japanese price. The English page even lists longer blocks that the Japanese portals don't: 240 minutes ¥73,000, 300 minutes ¥91,000 and 12 hours ¥250,000. The house rules there are the usual ones: no pressure for intercourse, no photos of the women, no swapping contacts, and a shower and gargle before anything starts.
Verdict
- Already have a Kabukicho room: the Kabukicho discount plus the on-the-spot review, 70 minutes for ¥18,000.
- No room, or you hate waiting for the knock: the meet-up course, 60 minutes for ¥19,000 plus about ¥3,000 for a hotel, with the walk off the clock.
- Going long: the sokuhime 90-minute deal at ¥26,000, if a woman you like is on standby.
- Booking in English: there's no tourist markup here, so book at the real price.
